In part 1 of this series, we chatted Shiyo Joo, a professional makeup artist based in KL and Singapore. To view that interview, click here. In part 2, we’ll be talking to Taisu, who’s also a professional makeup artist in KL. His style is very distinct – clean, minimalist, fresh and glowy, something that’s quite hard to find these days. The first thing you’ll notice when you meet Taisu is how kind, humble and polite he is, and that makes him such an awesome person to work with. Here, he shares about how he got into the whole beauty scene and his makeup kit must-haves.
What inspired you to pursue a career in makeup?
Music videos have always been a source of inspiration for me. I love how amazing and different characters are created for every theme – it’s like telling a story.
How did you get to where you are today? And what were your challenges?
I never had any professional training prior to becoming a makeup artist. As I was completely new to the industry, I took the plunge and participated in a Shu Uemura makeup competition, and I was really lucky to be one of the 10 finalists. I’m constantly challenging myself to translate visions and ideas into reality for every job assignment.
Who is your mentor?
My mentors include everyone who has ever supported and cared for me, and those who have shared their ideas with me.
Top makeup kit essentials?
A lightweight foundation that glides seamlessly onto the skin, yet has good coverage. My other must-haves include cream blushes, mascara, and good brushes to achieve a flawless finish.
Pro makeup tips or secrets?
Curling your eyelashes alone can make your eyes appear brighter and the white of your eyes look even whiter.
Positive quote you live by?
Have a balanced diet, get sufficient sleep, be kind to others for no other reason than to be kind, and avoid a stressful lifestyle.
