So far in this 5-part interview, we’ve featured 2 makeup artists, a hair stylist and a nail artist. In the final part of this series, we’ll be interviewing KL-based celebrity fashion stylist, Min Luna. We love her candor and how she has maintained her humility, kindness and genuine spirit, in an industry where diva and narcissistic personalities are not uncommon. Luna talks about her journey into the fashion scene, her wardrobe essentials and what keeps her going in the face of adversity.
How did you get into the fashion scene?
I’m still amazed as to how I ended up here, in fashion. When I was growing up, I couldn’t afford the pretty dresses my friends had. I never cared about fashion until I became a part of an editorial team. My editor and colleague inspired me to constantly keep abreast with the latest trends. That was when we started sharing a love for fashion, as we were required to style a cover girl regularly. Readers were impressed with our styling and were inspired to dress better for themselves. Also, image and branding are very important for our local celebrities. That’s where I come in. I help to shape their image and endeavour to make Malaysian TV, film, commercial or red carpet appearances more inspiring and easy on the eyes, so the celebrities themselves can focus on their jobs, knowing that they’re always looking their best.
How did you get to where you are today and what were the challenges you faced?
The biggest misconception people have about my work is that it is glamorous and easy. It’s actually really hard work. You have to constantly be on a creative roll, and you have to juggle other aspects of the job as well. That includes being a people person, being organized, managing your time and money efficiently, being careful with loaned items, and not giving up under pressure. It’s a tedious and comprehensive process where you have to keep going until you feel you’ve achieved what you set out to achieve, and more. In a notoriously competitive industry like fashion, that’s what you have to do to be the best. You can’t ever just settle for an OK. Despite the challenges, being a stylist is an opportunity for me to inspire women to understand their own roles better as well.
Who was your mentor?
I don’t have one. In reality, the world of fashion is a harsh one. Most of my seniors are people that I can’t see myself becoming in the long run. I’m trying to forge my own path and destiny. I get along with most of the people in the industry because of my love and respect for their work. But unfortunately, I’ve met some seniors who’ve felt entitled to be arrogant snobs just because they have been in the industry for more than 20 years. I think it’s bulls**t. Knowledge is meant to be shared, and it should be our social responsibility to be nice to one another.
What are your top wardrobe essentials?
A cool jacket to jazz up an otherwise mundane outfit, killer statement earrings, a loose-fitting white shirt, and a pair of fun heels to dance in!
Any styling tips or secrets?
Never ever try too hard. When you put an outfit together and it feels contrived, take off a single item. That’s the thing about styling – you need to own the look and make it your own. Throwing a look together is one thing, but if you don’t feel comfortable enough to pull it off, then it’s best to go with what suits your own personal style. The right makeup and hairstyle can really make or break your outfit too!
Positive quote you live by?
I always try to associate myself with successful women like B. Akerlund, Rachel Zoe, and Chriselle Lim. I maintain the stance that “if they can do it, so can I”. I also think that it’s important to always have a positive mindset and to treat others in a way that you’d like to be treated. Do that and your day will be excellent!
