We’re calling it, everyone is weaving threads into their hair in 2018. Last week, we saw Saoirse Ronan’s subtle silver threaded hair at the SAG Awards; this week, Lady Gaga rocks a grand corset braid to match her equally stunning voluminous Armani Privé gown at the Grammy Awards.
Now, this corset braid hair trend isn’t new: it was first spotted two years ago at the 2016 Vancouver Fashion Week, cinching the double dutch braids of models strutting down the Lesley Hampton show runway. It didn’t take long for the trend to go viral on Instagram in early 2017.
This year, Lady Gaga’s hairstylist Frederic Aspiras brings the corset hair back, first teasing it on his Instagram: “The look is romantic, seductive, Victorian inspired.” He braided two fishtails down her crown, then laced black string through like a corset.
“Gaga’s eyes were inspired by a dark starry night,” said Sarah Tanno, Lady Gaga’s makeup artist. To compliment the Armani Privé gown, she rimmed Lady Gaga’s eyes with black gel liner, winging it out to a dramatic cat eye. After generous lashings of mascara, she applied a loose silver glitter dusting.
The result? Paired with the Armani Privé gown (top: a black lace top; bottom: a wide sweeping overskirt), Gaga arrived on the red carpet with an extremely tied together look of sophistication and Victorian influence.
