American singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist, Patti Smith, was a driving force in the punk rock genre with her debut album Horses in 1975. Her album cover for Horses is considered to be one of the most prominently androgynous images in music history. Her most popular hit, Because the Night, was co-written with rock singer Bruce Springsteen. In 1978, that song ranked number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and she was later inaugurated in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
