And mighty fun they are too!
Designer Tien Pham created his own prototype of false eyelashes (which he calls “F.Lashes”) that are made out of actual light-emitting diodes (LEDs). They come in the colours pink, red, blue, light blue, white, yellow and green, and are even interactive. At the click of a button, you can make your LED lashes twinkle, sparkle and even go full-on dance mode.
How Does It Work?
“They are powered by a watch battery and will last up to 4 hours,” explained Pham. “I wanted to keep them lightweight because the controller is attached to the back of your head by hair clips. There ARE thin wires that connect to each eyelash, but they are nearly invisible unless someone is close to you.” They’re also motion sensitive and react to movements like nodding and turning.
Are They Distracting?
Not at all. “The light is NOT blinding. In fact, I often can’t tell I have them turned on. I have to cup my hand over my eye to see the light. You might see a bit of light when you’re in a dark room, but it’s not much,” he explained.
How Do I Apply Them?
You can apply them using regular old eyelash glue. It takes about two minutes to pop them on. As long as no connections or lines are broken, you can reuse them as often as you want.
Are They Safe?
“They do not emit any heat and there is no danger of shock at all… It’s very safe,” Pham assured. Phew, no worries about getting unwittingly electrocuted then!
I’m Sold! Where Do I Get Them?
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until Pham’s Kickstarter campaign is fully funded, as he only has prototypes at the moment. The campaign will be launching in July, but you can find out more about them here.
One of the earlier prototypes of LED lashes was produced by Korean multimedia artist Soomi Park in 2007. These lashes were made to give Asian women the appearance of bigger and brighter looking eyes. They can be activated by a sensor, which tracks movements of the pupil in the eyes and eyelids. The LED lights will also flicker when there is a change in head movement (source: soomipark.com).
Forget glitter and highlights – these new age lashes will make you the life and light of any party for sure.
