I recently met up with Holly Thaggard, CEO and founder of sunscreen and skincare brand Supergoop!, which is also co-owned by professional tennis player, Maria Sharapova. After checking and testing out the range for myself, I can honestly see why Maria is a huge advocate of the brand. Not only are the products easy to apply, but they also feel comfortable on the skin, and combine innovative multi-functionality with effective skincare ingredients. Most importantly, they don’t feel goopy on the skin and they don’t leave a white cast behind like your typical sunscreen.
Here, Holly talks about the brand and the importance of sun protection at any age.
How did you get started with Supergoop?
A friend of mind had contracted skin cancer, which really struck a chord with me. Skin cancer is preventable, and I wanted to raise awareness on the matter, more so as it is the leading form of cancer in the United States. Applying my background in teaching, I wanted to build a brand that was focused on educating the public on the importance of UV protection, and encouraging them to incorporate sunscreen into their daily skincare regimen.
How did Maria come to be the co-owner of the brand?
Maria reached out to me and told me that she had long been a fan of Supergoop!, and had discovered the brand at Sephora. She said that she loved the formula as it was the only sunscreen she used that didn’t sting her eyes on the court, especially under the hot sun and in scorching temperatures. It’s also long lasting, and provides UV protection for up to 90 minutes. As she is a huge supporter of our values, from our cruelty-free practices to our anti-aging philosophies, we both decided that it would be the perfect partnership.
What are your favourite skincare ingredients when it comes to neutralizing UV damage and accelerated skin aging?
They would have to be sea buckthorn, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E. Sea buckthorn is rich in antioxidants like Omega-7 fatty acids to heal sunburn, cuts, wounds and other types of skin damage. On the other hand, Vitamins B5 and E help the skin to combat free radicals to slow down signs of photo-aging like premature lines and wrinkles.
What is the highest SPF we should go for? And how much should we apply to our faces?
I would say go for at least an SPF50. Most people don’t apply as much as required anyway, so with the amount they normally use, it would end up being an SPF30 or 40 instead. How much sunscreen you apply depends on the size of your face. As long as your entire face is covered with a layer of sunscreen, you’re good to go. Just remember to reapply every 2 hours as it will wear off throughout the day.
What is the best age to start applying sunscreen?
Start as early as you can, and educate your kids about the importance of UV protection. I think it’s really important to teach our kids how to incorporate sunscreen into their daily regimen themselves, instead of applying it for them. That way, they’ll cultivate a good habit out of it and it will be like second nature to them.
Any personal skincare tips?
Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated is just as important as protecting and taking care of our skin.
What’s next for Supergoop?
We’re excited to expand our brand in South East Asia. There’s a lot of potential here, especially in a hot and sunny climate where sun protection is extremely important. We’re also looking to share more multi-functional products and newer formulations that not only protect the skin, but also contain healing and moisturising properties.
Supergoop! is currently available on the Sephora website and will be available at all outlets nationwide in June 2017.
