RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR
I’ve always enjoyed using momentous dates to take on new year’s resolutions, ones that I try not to put off until the end of the year. On 1st Jan 2009, I had my ears pierced for the first time. Pah, pierced ears, you say. I’ve had mine pierced since I was a baby! On 1st Jan 2014, I proudly concluded a little yearlapse video project. On 1st Jan 2017, I braved public holiday traffic to get my hair done.
PAINT IT BLONDE
Going from black to blonde is never easy. For the past 2 years I’ve poured and perused every transition experience story I could get my hands on. I’m not a stranger to bleached hair (I had a phase in college where I had dip dyed peacock hair), and knew first hand how damaging bleached hair can be. My concerns: (1) Bleached brittle hair, and I am quite attached to my dark, healthy locks! (2) I’m not the fairest of ’em all, I have a bit of an uneven tan issue, and to throw on a bright colour to match? (3) Cost. When your roots start to show, it’s going to be high-maintenance.
However I threw caution to the wind when I heard about Redken’s City Beats – a line of bold semi-permanent hair colours during the grand launch of Hair Quarters. I scheduled an appointment for the 1/1/17 (because yours truly is dramatically enthused like that).
ENTERING HAIR QUARTERS
Chloe, the manager of Hair Quarters at Pavilion Elite, greeted me with a warm smile as I entered the salon. We had a pre-consultation for what colour we wanted to achieve. I was prepared – I spent the whole week gathering a moodboard of colours – #ombre, #greyblue, #iceblonde. Periwinkle blue or a greyish blue was my first choice, but Chloe told me it would take 3 bleaches, and even then, tough luck, because blue is a hard colour to achieve without green. In the end we agreed on a shade of ash violet. After taking one last photo of my virgin hair, I bid it adieu.
There were times when I stared in the mirror directly in front of me and was regretting my decision – why oh why would I bleach my silky, healthy, hair! Immediately after that thought my mind would do a snap-back and tell myself: Chloe knows what she’s doing, chill out and let them do what they’re good at. Here’s the general gist: We bleached, waited, washed, dried. Bleach, wait, wash, dry. To ensure my hair wouldn’t fry during the intense bleach session, Chloe added a (Step #1) pH Bonder to the bleach mixture – and after the bleaches my hair was treated to a 10 minute soak in (Step #2) of the pH Bonder. The two sessions of bleach easily took up 4 hours!
When the time for colour came, Chloe sectioned parts of my hair and painted a dark violet paste on. Each section was painted on with extra care in quick, precise strokes, and I found myself admiring her painstaking dedication to getting every strand of my hair evenly coloured.
Wait with a head full of Medusa aluminium foil, wash, dry.
I was ushered back to my seat for a Heatcure Treatment – the latest of Redken’s groundbreaking heat-activated salon service. How does using heat to treat your hair work? Mind you, the straightener-like tool you see isn’t just a simple straightener, it’s exclusively designed by Redken to heat to 140°C, penetrate into the deep roots of the hair, and deliver instant proteins and surfactants with the Heatcure formula. As I faced the mirror with my turbaned head, I could not stop staring. If you’ve ever seen anyone with bright hair walking down the street, chances are 99% of the people on the street will be staring too. I hesitantly ran my fingers through my freshly dyed and dried hair and found no resistance, smooth as silk. The purple was a deep vibrant hue – think vibrant eggplant, think Katy Perry 2012, think almost neon-like violet on a cackling witch! I loved it, and decided there and then that I will only wear black for the rest of the month. It was much deeper than I hoped for but Chloe assured me the colour will fade after a few washes to a gentler lavender shade.
