I sure didn’t! This was my first Brazilian IPL experience after all. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal technology uses filtered light (lasers) to weaken hair follicles at their roots, which results in up to 80% of hair reduction after an average of 6 to 10 sessions. It also helps to reduce pigmentation and the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
Brazilian IPL is the way to go for permanent and painless hair removal
Even though Brazilian IPLs can be a tad costly, they’re definitely more cost-effective in the long run as you’d be saving on monthly wax appointments and transportation costs. Spurred by the thought of finally being unencumbered by unwanted hair growth, and being able to swim any time without worrying about unsightly hair peeking out, I decided to take the plunge and give the Brazilian IPL at Strip a try. The standard IPL applicator is 3cm and applies direct heat onto the skin, which can cause a painful and stinging burning sensation. However, Strip has recently introduced its new Power Pac IPL device with a customized 5cm applicator, which is supposed to feel comfortable and near painless – kind of like a hot stone massage.

My IPL technician Jane ushered me into a clean, quiet and comfortable room. I was then cleaned and powdered down with talcum powder before being shaved with a brand new razor. After being shaved, I was cleaned again with antiseptic wet wipes and Jane proceeded to apply a cool gel one section at a time. And when I say cool, I actually mean cold. The gel is refrigerated and can be a bit of a shock once it touches your skin, but you’ll get used to it after the first application.
Nope, that’s not me! But this picture gives you an idea of what the gel and Powerpac IPL device looks like
After the gel was applied, the timer-based Powerpac applicator was massaged over the gel. It felt slightly warm and tingly. I was expecting to get burnt and kept cringing at the thought of it, but it turned out to be almost quite painless. The cold gel was actually quite soothing and it helped to neutralize the heat of the light. This process was repeated several times until every area was covered. Once that was done, I was once again cleaned with a new antiseptic wipe and Jane applied some Ice Cream moisturizer (not the edible kind!) and that was pretty much it!
Ice Cream moisturizer to help soothe any skin irritations after treatment
According to Jane, the number of sessions required to achieve complete and permanent hair removal differs for each individual. Gradually, the hair becomes more sparse and will appear finer after a few sessions.
It took about 45 minutes in total and it was quite a comfortable process overall. Strip takes pride in hygiene and I really appreciate how thorough and clean the technicians are here. I was constantly inquired if I was doing alright or if I was in any pain whatsoever. The technicians are also professional and the whole process didn’t feel awkward at all. The cold gel can be quite shocking initially, but I found that it got really soothing after the first round.
It’s been about 4 days after my treatment and I haven’t gotten any ingrown hairs and there hasn’t been any painful or burning sensations whatsoever. My hair has grown back just a wee bit and it looks finer and more sparse than before. There are some bare patches where the hair seems to have stopped growing as well. And the skin does feel noticeably softer too. Overall, I’m pleased as punch with the experience. I don’t have a very high threshold of pain, so this treatment was a very welcome change to getting a wax. 5 more sessions till I’m completely hairless!
The Brazilian IPL hair removal service at Strip: Ministry of Waxing is priced at RM900 per session and is available at Strip Bangsar, Sunway Pyramid, The Curve, Solaris, Suria KLCC, Mid Valley, Avenue K, and quite recently, Gurney Paragon (Penang).
