Want to know how to apply makeup like a pro? Well, you’re in luck because we’ve got international makeup artist, Benjamin Ruiz, to teach us a couple of awesome tips!
As Laura Mercier’s Director of Global Creative Artistry, Ben flew down for a visit recently to celebrate the brand’s 20th anniversary with us.
I was so thrilled when I finally got to meet Ben. I’ve long admired his work and it was such an honour when I finally got the chance to interview him in person! He did the makeup exclusively for this month’s beauty shoot and it was so indescribably amazing to watch a master at work.
Benjamin’s keen eye for beauty and over two decades worth of experience in the makeup industry has made him one of the most sought after international makeup artists. Here, we will explore the world of beauty through his eyes:
What skincare product(s) or tips would you recommend?
“I would recommend a face polish with round micro-beads to exfoliate the skin and keep it looking refreshed and renewed. Invest in good skincare and apply it religiously, stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water and take your supplements. It’s important to keep your skin nourished from inside and out.”
Any advice on applying makeup for skin with acne scarring, cystic acne, eczema or rosacea?
“Use less foundation as the product tends to cling to and look more obvious on dry irritated skin. Use a tinted moisturiser instead as it keeps your skin hydrated and gives you sheer coverage to even out your overall complexion. Finally, use Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage to conceal any areas that need more coverage.”
Do you have any tips on apply makeup for hooded or more mature eyelids?
“Go for medium-toned matte shades with a slight shimmer. Apply it initially as a wash of colour along the base of the lashes and blend it upwards into the crease.”
What are your top three essential makeup products?
“They would have to be Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage, Secret Camouflage Brush and Tinted Moisturiser.”
Could you share a few pro makeup advice or application techniques to help us ladies out?
“(1) Before applying eyeshadow or doing a heavy smokey eye, apply a dusting of translucent powder under your eyes to catch any fallouts. Once you’re done with the eye makeup, gently sweep away all the powder under your eyes with a fan brush.
(2) To determine the right foundation shade for your skin tone, swatch three different shades onto your jawline. The one that blends in seamlessly into your skin is the right shade for you.
(3) When applying powder onto your face, massage powder into your powder puff and fold it into a taco for best application
(4) Before applying liquid eyeliner, outline the shape you want with a pencil eyeliner as a guide.
(5) Be vigilant in taking care of your makeup – don’t leave it under direct sunlight or let it get hot as this will adversely alter its texture.
(6) To minimise mistakes when applying eyeliner, start by applying it as a series of dots and connect them to form a line.”
What are your must-have tools for makeup?
“A fluffy blending brush, an eye colour brush, an eyeliner brush and a crease brush.”
What do you do to take care of your skin?
“I occasionally indulge in spa treatments. I recently went to the Caudalie Spa in Bangsar Shopping Centre and it was absolutely amazing!”
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
“I really enjoy cooking and experimenting with different flavours. I’m also the proud father to my beautiful dogs, Barbie and Victoria. I also love a good Matcha Latte and I indulge in it almost daily!”
Who inspires you?
“Laura Mercier has always inspired me and still inspires me to this day. For instance, even though we didn’t have much time at one particular press event, she spent almost all her time on a girl who had severe acne – applying her makeup and teaching her how to apply it on herself to feel confident in her own skin. The girl was so touched that she broke down crying. Laura’s beautiful and sincere heart always shines through and makes me fall in love with her as a person over and over again.”
What’s the best beauty advice you have ever received?
“Natural beauty is, and always will be, timeless. Even though makeup and beauty trends come and go, natural will always remain current. Also, in Laura’s own words – ”Always be your authentic self in a world of constant pressure to conform and embracing your own unique beauty is a gift you give to yourself.”
