What wearing yellow eyeshadow taught me about my monolids

By Daphne Ng
June 19, 2018

Let me start with a confession: I own at least 10 eyeshadow palettes.

Hang on, is this a prelude to makeup shaming or makeup bragging? Far from it. I don't care how many eyeshadow palettes you own (or not), but if you'd like to talk about the best warm toned or spicy eyeshadow palettes to own this summer, I'm all ears. A year ago I did not own any eyeshadow palettes, nor did I care to own any. This is mainly due to my extremely sepet, hooded, monolid eyes - yes, the ones that - after carefully drawing on black liner, disappears as soon as I open my eyes and stare straight ahead. What I'm left with isn't a strong, bold, wing - it looks more like a skinny rat's tail that extends out past the natural angle of a glorious, sharp wing.

Translation: My monolid eyes are the reason I've stayed away from eyeshadows despite cooing over every new shimmery, jaw-dropping, buttery palette I see on my IG feed.

After a makeup challenge proposed by my colleague - YELLOW eyeshadow, I carefully, cautiously, pulled out my dusty palettes (I didn't say I couldn't resist a good makeup sale) and swept the otherwise daring shade over my hooded lids. It was an easy start, followed by a (proper) wing, and a glittery duochrome inner corner highlight - I was already going bold with yellow, why not go all the way?

Yellow isn't an everyday colour for sure, but it's definitely wearable. I'll admit I half expected people to come up to me to ask if I had an eye infection. The results were oddly satisfying despite my initial hesitation for such an uncommon shade. Maybe it was because of the unusual colour, maybe it was how the yellow almost blended into my warm yellow undertone skin, maybe it was the compliments I received ("wow, that's actually a really cool look!"), maybe it was the mission and effort I took with my makeup - but I really, really liked the outcome. So much that I wore it two other times, with a different lip and cheek variation!

Now that I know my monolids aren't hopeless when it comes to eyeshadow, that I, too, can rock the buzzy yellow eye, I'm super keen to make other colours and shades work. The beauty industry rarely markets bold looks on monolids. Oh sure, graphic liners and sharp splashes of avant-garde swipes, but is that what our monolids are only good for? Onwards to wearable blue, purple, and green!
