Malaysia is giving the world a taste of the country with a nasi lemak inspired national costume.
Reigning Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 Samantha Katie James will be showcasing this dress as well as a stunning red gown, both by Dior-trained designer Brian Khoo at the 66th Miss Universe competition.
The customised dress was conceptualised Khoo and took 400 hours of craftsmanship. On the dress, are individual hand-embroidered pearlescent beads that cast the ivory silk dress in a luminous glow – to represent the decadent coconut milk-infused rice.
What about the sambal, you ask? Fiery ruby tones of crystals give the dress a bold, spicy kick. The side of cucumbers, eggs and slivers of anchovies are represented via a constellation of glass bead, while the painted ‘banana leaf’ is a nod to our batik.
There’s even a sunny-side up to complete the look!
