After the departure of former Versus Versace’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello to succeed Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent this year, the house of Versus Versace has had a missing link in their kingdom.
In recent news, it seems that this vacancy will be filled by ex One Directioner and the brooding sweetheart of model Gigi Hadid – Zayn Malik. Donatella Versace first encountered Zayn Malik several years ago with his former bandmate, Harry Styles. Zayn’s vibe generally oozes a sort of silent mystery, with a bad boy personality – which was what drew Versace to intrigue. She then continued to encounter the singer after he started dating Gigi Hadid, who works with Versace “all the time”.
“Versus is the rock and roll soul of the Versace family and has always been associated with music,” Versace said in an interview after the Versus Versace show at London Fashion Week. “Everyone from the Foo Fighters to Lenny Kravitz has played at the shows, and it is all about rebellion. For me, Zayn was the perfect fit.” “He impressed me very much – he was so mature, so thoughtful,” Versace said about Zayn. “And then he told me how much he loved fashion. It was then I knew he was the right face for what I had in mind. Many celebrities do clothing lines that just aren’t relevant. This one? It will be. He’s smart to do it with me.”
Thus begins the journey to create Zayn X Versus, a capsule collection of women’s and men’s clothing that will be made public to the media and buyers in Spring; it will hit Versus stores and online sometime in May. Zayn will also become the face of Versus Versace in the advertising campaigns. With his bad boy persona, it fits in well with what Versus represents – “loud” and “rebellious”, “everything that the Versace line is not.” Versace wants Zayn to be a part of this creative endeavour so that he can help her “talk to his followers”, to bridge a link between her house and those who worship him. According to her, “they are a new generation that without working with someone like Zayn, I will never reach.”
Zayn Malik agrees and also shares the designer’s excitement in building this collaboration. “I’ve always wanted to design clothes and there’s no other brand I’d rather design for than Versus. I know we’ll create something amazing.”
