Are you a fan of the sophisticated high heel? Or the functional flats? The big debate continues as we talk to two women with different opinions on which footwear they prefer in this day and age.
Sharifah has always been a fan of high heels since she was a child and at present, won’t be caught anywhere without a pair of them except the beach and while working out (because, obviously!). “I remember wearing my mother’s high heeled shoes and walking around in the house when I was only 6. I simply feel better in heels, it makes me feel like I can do anything. Even at work, it makes me feel as if I have everything under control.”
What are the most absurd occasions that you’ve worn heels in?
In London, while taking the subway every morning to work during rush hour.
Do you have any embarrassing story related your heel-wearing routine?
Yes, of course! My heel got detached while walking on the side of the road once. Luckily my friends were nice enough to help me out and even walk slower with me to the car.
Downsides of wearing heels?
Definitely can’t run or move fast but it empowers me nonetheless, so it doesn’t matter. Plus, I can always remove if I had to run in an emergency.
What does your heels look best with?
Since I’m of shorter stature, I would say long dresses and pants as they immediately lengthen my legs.
Heels to wear on a daily basis?
What is your highest heel owned?
“Being a mere 5’3, wearing a pair of heels instantly makes me stand out and feel more confident.”
Being always on the run for work and play has made Emmeline value comfort as she goes on her day. “I love my flats because it’s practical as I’m an active person. If I was out in a pair of heels, I would always have a pair of flats at standby. I would say, flats are always reliable.”
What’s your take on high heels as a flats lover?
Heels are a confidence boost that can end sorely at the end of the night. I can’t understand people who travel through airports in heels. That’s just something that I find very odd.
When was the first time you wore flats and fell in love with it?
Are booties included? My earliest memory was a pair of brown leather sandals my father bought for me, probably when I was the age of 4.
Do you have any embarrassing/funny stories relating to flats?
I have more traumatic stories with heels, hence another reason as to why I prefer to wear flats now.
Place that you’ll never be caught wearing flats to?
Ballroom events. Never.. ever.
Do you agree with the saying that flats are “the joy of a shoe you can dance in?”
Yes, it is defintiely a bonus to have pain-free feet in an attractive pair of flats at the end of the night.
Does wearing flats restrict you or permit you to be yourself?
It totally permits me. If I’m out, I move about a fair bit so I would naturally prefer to wear flats. I would say my daily sense of dressing is either casual or smart casual. A polished pair of ballerinas in fitted jeans and a top would be something I wear quite often.
What’s currently your favourite pair of flats?
I love my Tods and Louis Vuittons. Tods are great for daily wear, and excellent driving shoes due the grip on the heel. The LV ones make a good upgrade to my casual looks.
Flats are best worn with?
Just with my style, wearing flats are best worn with fitted shirts and ripped/skinny jeans.
“If I was out in a pair of heels, I would always have a pair of flats at standby. I would say, flats are always reliable.”
