Sometimes all you need to boost your career, is someone to inspire you. Marie Claire worked with four industry experts – a celebrity chef, a fashion designer, a fitness Youtuber, and a marketing director – and paired them up with four of our readers who aspire to gain an insight into their world. After a week of the mentorship programme, we sat down for a chat with the Director of Marketing at The Gardens Mall and Summer Lim about th eir experience and achievements.

Summer Lim, PR & Marketing Manager at Flash Gadgets
How was your mentorship?
I didn’t really know what to expect on my first day. It’s good that Gabrielle and I just talked and got to know each other – not really find what we have in common – but talked about her experiences and how I resonate with that.
Why do you want to learn from Gabrielle?
Just like Gabrielle, I am on my next chapter in life to join the family business, Flash Gadgets. Despite having a couple of years of working experience, I want an opportunity to learn about how she deals with balancing business and family, what keeps her inspired, as well as improving a business in her family name. I’d also like to pick her brains to discover her approaches to marketing in the retail world.
Was your family supportive of your choices?
Well they weren’t directly pressuring me to get into the family business! My dad was actually quite encouraging of my choices, if I had the opportunity to go out, he wanted me to go to experience different things. Coming back into the family business was my own decision.
What was Gabrielle like as your mentor?
I think she is really down to earth, and it’s great that she lets me in. She’s bold – when she has a concept for an ad campaign, she dares to push through to get what she wants. She makes people feel comfortable around her because she’s very giggly and she laughs a lot.
What did you learn through this mentorship?
Learning to trust my instincts. Most of the time it’s always right, but there’s that voice at the back of your head pulling you back. Other than that, hanging in there, putting passion into my work, and hoping that we would continue this relationship that we have built during these few days.
