We were transported to our childhood days with tunes from The Little Mermaid and Cinderella playing in the background as we waited for Dolce & Gabbana’s FW16 show to start. Although dressing princesses is nothing new for the fabulous duo, Domenico and Stefano (pretty sure the talented duo has enough royal belles donning their creations), we were quite curious to see what they had in mind. And judging from the fairy tale inspired invitation card complete with an audio tune, we knew what to expect (another reason being that the duo had uploaded hints of backstage shots with the hashtag #DGFabulousFantasy).
Their Disney princess? Miss glitter-bug with a slight hoity-toity approach to getting dressed complete with a golden pre-pumpkin carriage as a handbag and glittering plexiglass heeled Mary-Janes with gems embedded in them. She had on amazing head-gear with lots of ribbons and brooches and jewels; and pretty dresses that would make Cinderella wish she had the same duo fairy godmothers- wait godfathers- that the Dolce Princess did.
The catwalk saw the brand’s signature shapes – A-line shift dresses and little military jackets all transformed into royalty with a touch of the magic wand. Floral dresses featured white tulip and pink rose prints were a strong counterpoint to the pantomime dramatics, several exquisitely embroidered with chiffon flowers. The Disney princesses rocked the runway along with the DG Princess – Cinderella looked super-chic in a blue lurex glitter dress and her hair tied with a blue bow, while another version of her had the mice images embroidered onto a white crepe mini dress; Snow White donned a red form-fitting gown embroidered beautifully with little dwarves and another in images of apples. The mirror in Sleeping Beauty was tastefully smashed into pieces and sewn onto a black dress.
Instead of having the full looks displayed at the finale, the duo had models in identical pink and silver sequinned dresses embroidered strut confidently down the runway. Well, i’m sure we would all feel like modern day princesses in this magical collection, and live happily ever after.
