The kebaya is a beautiful traditional blouse-dress combination that is able to transcend the racial and cultural divide for women of Southeast Asia. It originated as a modest yet appealing blouse for women in the Nusantara, and it eventually became endemic to the women of Brunei, Burma, Southern Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia. It signifies unity – a delicate piece of clothing that can be worn by women regardless of the colour of their skin or the views they hold dear.
However, today the kebaya is seen as “too sexy”, and should only be worn by skinny women in this supposedly evolving society. Malaysian women are put through body-shaming and social pressure to conform to a more “conservative” standard of clothing, having them opt for long abaya’s instead of their own traditional dress. In order to bring back the Malaysian identity, the SEED Foundation brings you a #bringbackthekebaya movement event on the 12th November, 2016 at MakeSpace Quill City Mall. This event is held to not only celebrate the kebaya, but to also bring together a Malaysian community from all walks of life to reminisce the days when the kebaya was prominent and embraced.
This event also aims to give back to the community. SEED is a foundation is Chow Kit that assists PLHIV, drug users, sex workers, the LGBT community, and the homeless. They not only provide sustenance in the form of meals to the communities but also act as a drop-in centre, which assists with medical references as well as provide societal support to the Chow Kit community. Profits from the event will go to this charitable foundation.
During the event, there will be a serving of our beloved Malaysian food, a Joget Lambak performance, stalls featuring kebaya-related items, a talk on the history and evolution of the kebaya in the Nusantara by a Kebaya expert, and entertainment by special guests. Most importantly it will be a union of different races, culture and body-types through the kebaya dress, to bring Malaysians closer together.
