When Zafigo was invited by the George Town Festival in 2016 to do a panel session on women and travel, they did not expect such a positive outcome. Four formidable women recounted their tales from their travels to destinations often frowned upon as being unsafe or dangerous – especially for solo travelling women. Initially planned as a small intimate sharing session, the talk attracted a full house with 60 women in attendance.
This year, zafigo.com launches ZafigoX, Asia’s first women empowerment and travel event hosted in conjunction with George Town Festival 2017. Held across the span of three days in Penang’s Royale Chulan Hotel, it is set to host over 300 women from all around the world and from all walks of life.
On the panel: Petrina Thong, a Malaysian who hitchhiked from Sweden to Malaysia with just $200 in her pocket; Jin Jeong, a South Korean who has cycled 63,000km all around the world; Manal al-Sharif, who led a right to drive campaign in Saudi Arabia; Brendan Ó Sé, who will be presenting a talk and hands-on workshop on travel photography; amongst many more individuals who have their story to tell.
“The talks at ZafigoX were carefully curated under themes such as ‘Breaking Barriers’ and ‘Destinations’.” said Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, founder of zafigo.com. “Under the first umbrella, our speakers will share inspiring stories of how travelling has helped them break the barriers that were holding them back, making a lasting positive impact on their lives. The latter theme will be on women who have gone on epic journeys, sharing their motivations, challenges and what they have learned along the way.”
Zafigo – a glamourisation of the term ‘Safe I go’ – aims to nurture and preserve the spirit of solo women travellers and women who have never travelled but yearn to do so. Here’s to hoping ZafigoX expands its reach to take place annually in many other countries around the world.
