On the evening of 19 February 2019, the fashionable world was sent into a state of shock when news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing broke. Lagerfeld had been noticeably absent from several fashion shows since late 2018 due to health conditions. It was not made known just how serious his illness was.
Throughout pass 65 (possibly more!) of the fashion industry, Karl Lagerfeld was at the forefront of defining and creating new trends. In memory of the fashion legend, we look back at Lagerfeld’s greatest achievements throughout the years leading to his passing.
Balmain’s new apprentice

Lagerfeld first started making a name for himself when he won first prize in a contest organised by the Secretariat International de la Laine (International Wool Association). The sketch of the coat that won him the prize was later produced by Pierre Balmain. At just 17 years old, Lagerfeld hired by Pierre Balmain as an assistant first before progressing on to becoming his apprentice.
