CANCER SURVIVOR & ACTIVIST
Hiba was diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age of 25 years old. She had her left breast and lymph nodes removed. On the outside, she is bubbly and carefree, and remembered by her doctors as the girl who was excited about her very first chemotherapy. But internally, she was battling her own demons, and just when she thought she was at the end of her treatments, she was told that she had to prolong her treatment for another year before she could be considered ‘cancer free’. Fortunately for Hiba, she found a community of fellow young cancer patients whom she could speak to about what she went through. That inspired her to start her volunteer work as a counsellor for young patients.
Hiba’s counselling sessions slowly began to include young patients who were suffering from different types of cancer aside from breast cancer. Through counselling, she was able to help them address the adolescent issues and questions they may have about living with cancer at such a young age. Seeing how some of the youth had difficulty paying for their treatments she has even started initiatives to help raise funds for their treatments. Hiba’s goal is to start changing the perception of the people around her about cancer and teaching them to interact with patients.
