Dr Chai decided that the biotechnology field was definitely her forte the moment she was exposed to the world of research. She fondly recalls that when she first started her career as a research scientist, she would head into the lab at 6am in the morning, and stayed until 9pm, long after the work day had ended.
Her award-winning discovery allows us to detect dangerous bacteria that causes food borne diseases via scent and was a result of spending long hours in the lab and seeing the bacteria she researched on as ‘pets’. The discovery was purely a marvel that she stumbled on by chance, once she noticed that each of her bacteria would emit a different smell. Further research proved that her ‘pets’ imitates bacteria found on raw chicken. Dr Chai’s discovery eliminates the wastage of raw chicken that would otherwise need to be sent for testing for diseases like salmonella. Winning the L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science award allowed her to continue the research that she stumbled upon. She hopes to see her method turn into a house-hold product that can be easily used by consumers.
