Have you ever made your daily visit on social media only to find your timeline flooded with sweet lengthy statuses or loving photos of your friends with their partner, followed by a string of congratulatory comments as they celebrate another month of being together, better known as ‘monthsary’?
‘Monthsary’, which is short for ‘monthly anniversary’, has recently become a popular celebration, especially among teenagers and young adults. Instead of waiting for a full year to celebrate, couples would celebrate their relationship every month.
According to Lim Sor Wen, 25, her boyfriend of over a year and six months would buy her flowers accompanied with a written note and they would have dinner together for their monthsary celebration.
“Every month together feels like a significant milestone for us,” explained the Advertising Executive of Star Media Group Berhad. It appears that anniversaries are not enough anymore when two individuals are crazily in love. Monthsary is seen as a form of appreciation which usually takes place at the start of a relationship. Most modern day couples tend to look forward to the thrill of spending time and counting the days of being together.
“Personally, I find the celebration meaningful as it allows couples to show and remind each other how much they care and appreciate one another. It definitely strengthens the relationship,” Lim added.
Our parents only celebrated anniversaries, once a year. Usually their wedding anniversary. One cannot help but wonder why monthsary was introduced in the first place and is fast becoming a thing among our society? Have relationship come to a point where it is so unstable and fragile that the act of making it through another month together is a cause for celebration?
