Oon Sok Imm, an English teacher in Universiti Sains Malaysia, was not aware of the existence of monthsary and was surprised that it is celebrated among young couples everywhere thus expressing her concern over the celebration.
“Perhaps the problem why most relationships now don’t last as long as before anymore is because couples are too focused on measuring the strength of their relationship by counting the days of being together. As a result, they miss out on the journey of the relationship”, shared the mother of two.
Happily married to her husband for 29 years now, she felt that being in a relationship has become a competition among the youngsters whereby they are quick to jump into a relationship and would compare their relationship with that of others based on the number of days they were together.
“When you’re in a relationship, it’s not a matter of how long you can maintain it. Instead of keeping track of how many days left until the next monthsary, use that time to connect and learn about each other. It is about living in the moment of that beautiful period as two individuals in love,” she said when asked on the advice she has for these young people.
