This is the first time Team MC is trying out The Healthy Food People. Their meals are chef curated and the meal delivery service focuses on healthy takes on both local and western dishes.
The Healthy Food People (THFP) was founded in Penang 3 years ago by sisters Sara and Jane Tan (get to know them!), the company expanded into Kuala Lumpur in August ’17! Every week, they provide a different meal option each day. Just place your order by 11p.m, and the next day your meal will be delivered right to your doorstep during your preferred time slot. For now, they offer lunch boxes during the week, but soon enough they will be expanding into breakfast and dinner, including the weekends. They will also offer “add ons” such as refreshing drinks, desserts, and other snacks.
Delivery Day 1
Grilled ” Ikan sambal Olek” served with coconut & mint barley pilaf, roasted eggplant salad with orange parsley vinaigrette.
This meal was not at all what I expected – in a good way. I love Malay food, but I’ve always found it quite impossible to make them healthy. My grilled ikan sambal oelek from The Healthy Food People has proven me wrong. Let’s start with my favourite thing: the coconut and mint barley pilaf. I’ve supplemented rice with quinoa in the past, but this side has made me consider injecting barley into my meal preps. Plump with the slightest hint of mint, it was satisfying to sink my teeth into each grain of barley, and tasting its natural nutty sweetness.
What made me sit up and take a second look at my meal though, was the punch of sambal that blanketed the fish – which I have to say was surprisingly fresh and well-cooked (everyone who knows me, knows I have impossible standards when it comes to my seafood). Well-balanced and spicy – though not overwhelmingly so, it tied the dish together and made the meal feel indulgent and extra satisfying. The sambal serving was generous enough that I could, between spoonfuls, choose to mix it up with the roasted eggplant salad which was lightly tossed in an orange parsley vinaigrette (which might have been a little too light for my palate).
Highly recommended for those who aren’t willing to forgo the indulgence, but want to make small healthy tweaks to their diet!
Delivery Day 2
Parsley Butter Chicken Kiev served with cumin spiced sweet potato mash and garden salad with tomato vinaigrette
I am a big fan of mash potatoes and what beats eating healthy than having yummy sweet potato mash along with this well seasoned Parsley Butter Chicken Kiev. The garden salad that comes with it does not only look appealing but taste real good too. I kid you not, it’s simply delish. Most people like their salads loaded with sauces but I’m a minimalist when it comes to salad dressings so this definitely pleased me. you’ve ticked all my healthy diet requirement boxes from the sufficient amount of protein to my carbs to keep me going for the day.
Rendang Chicken Quinoa Bowl
Thank you for sending over this extra quinoa bowl. All meals come with wooden forks and spoon, they are so pretty. The quinoa bowl is layered with chopped mixed salad at the bottom and topped with quinoa (the quinoa is tasty on its own, like it’s been cooked in chicken stock and season with salt and pepper. The bowl has pickled ribbon carrots, shredded cucumber, stir fried shiitake mushrooms, sliced tomatoes and roasted vegetables (carrots, capsicum, chills and potatoes potatoes) and topped with lean chicken breast rendang.
The chicken rendang sauce is spicy, creamy and delicious, very pleasing to the Malaysian palate. The quinoa bowl has a great mix of fresh ingredients making each bite taste different, the toppings give added flavour to usually plain salad and quinoa. I would recommend this to anyone starting to eat healthy, this balanced meal is full of flavour and satisfying.
Check out their new restaurant!
In Sept ’17, The Healthy Food People launched it’s first brick and mortar, a café concept called Bold Grains. Located on the 1st floor of the Vipod building in the heart of Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Kia Peng), it is an awesome collaboration with successful entrepreneur, Timothy Tiah’s new co-working space, Colony.
Bold Grains caters to busy professionals who appreciate the quality of their food, but do not want to spend too much on their everyday meals. For those who are particularly health conscious, they offer a variety of such options as well. The menu will highlight a mix of local and western delights, with the option of fully customisable meals such as grain bowls, wholesome bowls and salads. They also provide grab & go options, breakfast, cakes, pastries, as well as a variety of refreshing drinks.
