Menstrual cramps are a very familiar occurrence amongst us ladies. In fact, it has been reported to affect more than 50% of menstruating females, with anti-inflammatory drugs being one of the top choices for pain relief. However, with the potential short-term side effects already ranging from nausea to diarrhoea, its long-term effects are underestimated.
To save you from all that fuss, we’ve put together a list of natural, drug-free alternatives for you to consider when wanting to ease your menstrual cramps.
It is extremely important to consume a balanced diet before and during your menstrual cycle. Some pro tips are:
- Avoid greasy/fatty foods – Many greasy or fatty foods, including cheeseburgers and french fries, are sodium-rich, which can cause or worsen bloating associated with water retention.
- Increase your intake of leafy vegetables – Leafy vegetables increase the level of Vitamin B, Calcium, Iron, and other nutrients that help to reduce menstrual cramps and keep your hormones balanced. However, try to avoid gassy vegetables such as beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage as these may also contribute to bloating.
- Ditch the ice-cream and soft drinks – You may have cravings for all the cold, sugary goodness, but you might want to resist them to avoid the horrible menstrual cramps that you will experience later on. However, feel free to treat yourself with some dark chocolate, as it has high levels of magnesium that help alleviate menstrual cramps!
