Attention All Single Ladies
Here’s the thing – there are many of us single ladies out there who are at a crossroads of not wanting to be single, but dealing with being single. Yes, to each their own. But that does not mean us single ladies can’t have our cake and eat it too.
The constant questioning at family gatherings or social events such as “why are you single …you are such a great girl”? can be rather insensitive, but is not intended to harm. Some of us just don’t want to settle for mediocrity, while some of us are still in the process of bettering ourselves, or unrequited love for that matter. Whatever the reason may be, we too know how to have fun and it does not necessarily require a significant other.
Behold! A guide for those of you seeking excitement but not sure where to find it.
Firstly, how about taking yourself out with the girls. Actually go out and have fun. A couple of drinks, dancing to some good music and just socializing. If you are thinking of taking a man for your own pleasure thereafter, that’s entirely up to you. *wink wink nudge nudge* Here are a couple of cool bars and dessert places right in the heart of KL itself to check out, each with its on perk.
Want to hide away? Then look no further, this bar exudes comfort with its dim and cozy private bar feels. You’ll feel like you’re in a members club admiring the wall decorated with copper skulls, and a toy train going around serving shots. Skullduggery is helmed by master mixer Viji Thomas, serving up classics which are perfected with the use of premium and craft spirits (many of which are specially imported by the bar itself). The house cocktails, are very creative and complex – often featuring unusual ingredients such as truffle-infused vodka, seaweed agave and cardamom milk jam to delicious effect.
#2 Virgin and Throne
TTDI is well known for its endless rows of- growing bars. This bar has no signboard but a shiny shield plastered on a door along Jalan Datuk Sulaiman (near Food Foundry). Once upstairs you’ll be greeted by a knight in shining armor. Virgin and Throne is separated into two sections, the bar and back area. The bar area is a combination of both the medieval and modern, with throne-like stools, chic couches and a VIP area in the back, complete with snug Chesterfield sofas and long tables for large groups. Privacy is taken care of with thick curtains that are used for partition. Cocktails are the main focus, with one favorite being the Marshmallow Milkshake, which has cream, vanilla and a vodka-infused marshmallow that tastes just like a vanilla milkshake. For first-timers, the two namesake cocktails Virgin and Throne are recommended. The former possess a sweet taste with fresh berries and is vodka based whereas the latter is a gin-based cocktail with fresh fruit juice. And if you’re feeling peckish the food on the menu is quite impressive.
#3 The Vault KL
Owned by local celebrity Patricia Knudsen and her her business partner Darren Yoon, the Vault KL has no screaming sign at the entrance but in-the-know patrons can walk up a stairway (look for the Prep Room) to gain entry via a vault door. Feel free to seek solace in a carefully curated list of cocktails and classics: The Vault Heist comes with lemongrass-infused vodka, and Smokey Negroni (London Dry Gin, Italian sweet vermouth, peated Islay whiskey) is so strong it could serve itself.
Moving on to something that is guaranteed to satisfy your sweet cravings.
#1 The Ice Cream Bar
Need I say more? An ice cream bar sounds as close as anything edible can be to Nirvana. Located in Desa Sri Hartamas, it serves a wide range of artisanal ice creams. Besides the “normal” flavors, there are a range of alcoholic ice cream flavors that need to be devoured.
Rubberduck @Plaza Damas, Sri Hartamas is all about girl power – owned by two women, Kat and Lin. These entrepreneurs have launched an alfresco cafe serving freshly baked cakes and fragrantly brewed coffee. The open space is perfect on a weekend afternoon where one can watch the world walk by, accompanied by servings of healthy breakfast (think -smoothie bowls and granolas), freshly baked Madeleines, carrot cake, and even beetroot chocolate cake. The real crowd favourite is the lemon meringue tart.
#3 Sugar Rush
Making the world a better place, one ganache-topped, cream-filled, almond-coated, sugar-dusted, butter cake at a time. A dessert place that is open till late, say no more… perfect for a Sunday night sugar fix before the Monday blues. With twenty varieties to choose from one is spoiled for choice.
