Kenshin at the Intermark
Here’s another hidden bar to add to your list of must visits! Kenshin is located at the Intermark right behind Starbucks Coffee where Tate bar used to be. Kenshin evokes that Japanese feel with its interior after all it is named after a well known samurai shogun. The shogun was a man who was driven by passion, flair and honor all of which make up the trait of an impeccable warrior. They specialize in rare and premium Japanese/Scotch whiskey and sake along with Asian inspired cocktails. We’re talking about cocktails with ingredients from all over Southeast Asia. Think Borneo and Indonesia for starters!
As I walked in I couldn’t help notice the interior which saw an absolutely beautiful motif of “carps leaping over dragon’s gate” an expression fondly used to represent high ranks and success in life based on the ancient mythology.
We had renowned bartender Osmund make for us two cocktails and one mocktail. Osmund has been named champion of the Diego World Class Malaysia 2016, and takes pride when it comes to creating his cocktails as he thoroughly studies about the ingredients and recipes he uses for the drink. His drinks will transport you on a South East Asia tour with the likes of cocktails Palomo Unggu from Borneo to Djamu from Java and Sumatera and a mocktail called Virgin Sinangein which features Jasmine flowers.
All three of the drinks above are simply delicious, and I have to say I admire how bar manager Osmund makes everything from scratch after thoroughly studying what goes into the drink. Also the ice at Kenshin is made from scratch and Osmund is known for his skills at cutting ice instead of squares he shapes them into balls which isn’t easy to do and it’s hard to find a bar who does it. As for straws, their straws are sustainable and eco friendly, hailing from Borneo they use bamboo straws to serve their drinks. So fret not about having to use plastic straws.
