With the natural coral reef suffering damages from tourists, anchors, and divers, Jaime Gonzalez Canto decided to create an artificial coral reef to help preserve the natural reefs of Cancun. Together with the help of Jason deCaires Taylor, they first installed 500 sculptures that were made with pH-neutral cement, coral, seaweed, and algae to encourage the growth of corals. At the time of writing about 1200 sculptures have been sunk into the sea to start the process of saving earth’s coral reefs!
