Anita Laguna is Chef Andrea’s latest venture into the gastronomical scene in Kuala Lumpur. Located at the mightily central location in Menara Amplewest, you’re in for an undisturbed treat once you settle down for a meal be it lunch or dinner. Chef Andrea bases his menu on his travel experiences between Europe and Asia (and everywhere else) in order to create masterpieces in his kitchen. Staying away from labels, Anita Laguna takes pride in putting a modern blend on European classics.
As I start my evening, the excellent team here puts me at ease at an instance. We’re served a platter of sea urchin, mushroom and tuna bites. Soon after, I was spoilt for choice with an assortment of warm, freshly baked breads including rye, black olive, tomato and others with a generous dollop of unpasteurized butter at the side.
The Amuse Bouche that I had the pleasure of trying here came in the form of a Stuffed Zucchini with ricotta and mint, a truly refreshing twist to the tempura-fried zucchini.
The second one which truly revved my appetite was their Irish Premium Oyster with brine jelly and lime scent. Just before the mains, we were served two dishes from the A la carte menu – the Spicy Crab Veloute; a crab “tian” saffron cream with wild garlic crisp and Chilled Spaghetti with Caviar Salad and a side of miso soup, which came with an interesting historic reference behind it.
The miso soup is Chef Andrea’s addition to Italian Chef Gualtiero Marchesi’s famous 80s dish. I must add that this pasta dish was the perfect combination of cold and hot and umami in a single serving and was merely the prelude to what was to come.
Moving on to the mains, the baked Tasmanian Red Snapper served with braised radish, Venus clams, semi-dried cherry tomatoes and saffron was indeed a favourite. The dish was served with much precision yet simple enough to the palate. Another interesting one to try is the Chicken and Slipper – a beautiful combination of poultry and shellfish that isn’t overwhelming to the taste buds.
At the end of the meal, you’d want to escalate your experience by satisfying your sweet tooth. We were definitely taken by surprise with what Anita Laguna had to offer.
After pre-dessert which consisted of an eclectic spoonful of pumpkin, spun sugar and balsamic vinegar, we tried one of Chef Andrea’s favourite (which is now my favourite too), the Miso Crème Brulee with green tea crumbles served with sake – a true twist to wrap up an eventful culinary occasion.
