Nestled along the laneway of shops along Petaling Street, Merchant’s Lane has been one of the most hyped-about cafes since it opened its doors in 2015. Taking a break from the trendy monochrome minimalism, Merchant’s Lane brings old-fashion charm with a touch of comfort – air-conditioning for guests who prefer to seek refuge on a sunny afternoon. A second alcove leads to stripped down walls with bouquets of dried flowers displayed on the ceiling. Go further in, and you’re met with – what I fondly recall from my childhood – a homey scene that brings to mind my grandparents’ home.
We chose a spot close to the windows – a welcome view of Petaling Street – and sat down to try some of the house’s dishes.
Clara: “A delightful fusion of local and western dishes – romanticised by the nostalgic memories of yesteryear, from the rustic walls and pretty coloured plates to the rattan furniture and dreamy sunlight peering through the ceiling. Every mouthful brings forth a cornucopia of flavours, unique yet familiar. Highly recommended for a brunch date or even some quiet time pondering over life with a cup of coffee in hand.”
Rose Honey Milk, RM12
Daphne: “I’m not a fan of anything cloyingly sweet. Though the Rose Honey Milk sounds exactly like that, it went down surprisingly well. I was expecting an overpowering perfumed scent of rose – instead I was greeted with warm comforting milk with just a light hint of rose and a touch of honey as sweetener. Definitely a cup for one to cuddle up with on a rainy afternoon.”
Italian Chow Mein, RM21
“I also liked the Italian Chow Mein. A sure way to put a Malaysian spin on any dish is to stir fry with traditional chicken rendang. It had a slight sour taste to it, almost like tomyam – not unpleasant! Probably my favourite out of the savouries.”
Kalau Aku Kaya, Better Than Sex
Shin: “They put a different spin on the pandan roti jala [Better Than Sex]! Melted cheese, served over kaya toast flavour ice cream that was very very rich and decadent. On top of that, a drizzle of gula melaka sauce. I’d come here for the dessert again.”
