This ‘Venice of the East’ is known for its Rajput-era palaces, many of which have been converted into luxury hotels. Legend has it that the glowing moonlight, gentle lakeside breezes and a whole entourage of courtesans inspired Maharana Jagat Singh II to build this pleasure palace (today, the Taj Lake Palace) on Lake Pichola to get away from his father. The most magical way to arrive is by gondola at twilight, when the city lights twinkle in the background and the Aravalli Mountains are silhouetted against the evening sky. Now with a story like that, who needs to leave this pleasure island?
