What is a Quote you live by?
To travel is to live” by Hans Christian Andersen. And this is so true. You never truly live if you don’t venture out from your comfort zone.
Who inspires you and why?
I don’t have a particular person that inspires me. I’m inspired from my travels- random people I meet, places I see, new cultural experience I encounter. Those experiences inspires me in more ways than one. It’s life-changing.
Tell us about a place you recently visited?
I recently visited the Caucasus and fell completely in love with Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Beautiful countries with stunning landscapes, gorgeous monasteries and the friendliest people you will ever meet.
Tell us your top 3 destinations? And a little description of the place.
My first love will always be the South of France. Once you’ve visited this part of France, you will yearn to return. I love visiting Provence and the Cote D’Azur in the late Summer when the sun is still shining and the days are long and the water is still warm for a dip in the Mediterranean sea. I love the villages of Provence especially Lourmarin and Ramatuelle. And when I’m by the coast, Antibes is my go to place for food and shopping away from the mass tourism of St Tropez. In the Summer you can find me tanning on the beach at Le Club 55 or on Plage des Ondes. If you’re travelling with your family, the Club Med Opio is a fab choice with a Cirque de Soleil experience on the hotel ground and a beautiful olive grove!
Scorpios Beach Club
The Greek Islands is another favourite. I love Hydra for its quaint town and numerous stunning spots for an Instagram photo. Spetses is for those in the know and these two are the closest to Athens for a day trip. Mykonos is a favourite for food and people watching. I love Scorpios Beach Club, it’s a fun place to meet people and to spend long summer days. Spilia is an amazing restaurant and a must when in Mykonos. The food is excellent and the place is stunning! But the Greeks don’t want us to know about Symi, Antiparos and Milos. Those islands are seriously out of this world. Beautiful landscape and gorgeous coves with crystal clear water. I suggest you head there first for a real Greek island experience!
Sri Lanka is a gem. I love the sleepy capital of Colombo with beautiful colonial buildings and I love spending evenings eating street food by the Galle Face Green. I’m a huge fan of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s famous architect and I love visiting his masterpiece Lunuganga estate by Lake Deduwa and the garden at Brief. Galle is a pretty fortified town with a pretty lighthouse and ramparts to walk on. And if you prefer a relaxing holiday, book into Cape Weligama for an experience of a lifetime.
What are the 3 essential items you must-have in your carry on luggage?
My Caudalie Beauty Elixir which I spray generously on the flight, a good book and I can’t live without my Rowntree Fruit Pastilles when I feel peckish and in need of a sugar!
Who do you usually travel with? Is the right company important when travelling?
I travel alone most of the time, and sometimes with my family and close friends. On my own I get to see more things. I’m the kind of person that would wake up at 6am and will already be discovering a place before everyone is up. I love exploring a place in the quiet of the morning.
Have you ever visited a country, and felt you left your heart there?
Totally! That would be France for me. From the vibrant neighbourhood of Marais in Paris to the salt plains of Ile de Re and the towns of Valbonne and Les Baux-de-Provence and Cassis, France is special to me. I could live there really. Closer to home, I’m starting to feel strongly for Langkawi. There’s something about the island that I just love!
What and where is the best meal you’ve ever had?
Oh this is a difficult one but if I had to choose, it would have to be this small restaurant called Wheelers Oyster Bar in the small town of Whitstable in Kent. It’s a simple restaurant nothing fancy but the comfort food was just amazing!
Do you prefer visiting cities or the beach? Why?
Beach! I love spending summer days tanning and swimming and tanning again. Sun, sea, sand, swaying palms. I love them all and of course with a good playlist consisting of good music by Buena Vista Social Club, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Compay Segundo!
How would you describe your Instagram account @wanderhat?
Wanderhat is all about experiencing and living the moment. Life unfolds in the present. Therefore, live. Being mindful- a state of active and intentional attention on the present is indeed a beautiful experience. I want to share these experiences with everyone. Please like and follow me on Facebook and Instagram 😉
If you could move to another country, Where would it be? Why?
For now I’m happy here in Malaysia. Malaysia will always be home. But I don’t mind having holiday homes in Canggu in Bali and Provence someday.
How do you produce such amazing photos on your Instagram account?
Train your eyes to see the beauty in everything. Sometimes a place may not be as beautiful at first sight but go on and explore, walk its streets, venture its alleyways, speak to the locals. Trust me you will find something. And always when you least expect.
Tell us more about your travels, and your travel wish list in 2018?
I’d love to see Romania again in the Summer- I was a student with little funds back then so I didn’t get to venture out as much as I would have loved to. I’d love to discover Transylvania’s medieval towns, churches and mountains. I remember it being so beautiful. East Timor is another country high on my list of places to see. I’ve been told they have amazing beaches and coves. I’d love to do a road trip. Last but not least, I want to visit the islands off Sabah and Sandakan to be more precise. I’ve been told they’re untouched and so beautiful. I need to do this before mass tourism creeps in.
What are your plans for Christmas and NYE?
I have no plans as for now but I wouldn’t mind doing a food tour of Japan or riding horses in Mendoza. Or getting high on life on the beaches of Jamaica and Dominica
