My Beautiful Scar
Sometimes we are left with a scar to remind us how precious life is and that confidence comes from within.
  Gail Massang, 29

The smile on Gail’s face overshadows the long scar she has on the right side of her face. Yet, it always reminds her how lucky she is to be alive today. Flashback to when Gail was 18 years old, she was club hopping with some friends that tragic evening, where they ended up in a pub in PJ; drinking some more alcohol and partying on.

“We left the pub at about 4a.m. and I jumped in the front seat albeit the protests from the boys in the car,” she recalls. Gail then fastened her seat belt and knocked out. Hours later, she woke up in a hospital feeling an excruciating pain with no recollection of what happened. Gail was devastated to find out that she was in an accident but even more that her face was disfigured. She had to go through three corrective surgeries to reconstruct her face.

Today, Gail walks tall despite her scar. “My scar is the reason why my family has become closer and my friends valuing life more. As for me, I’m just thankful I’m alive and doing the things I am able to.”

  Melonie Sta-Maria, 34

The scar that Melonie has today is actually a result of corrective surgery performed when she was about 11 years old to rectify the 'crooked' arm which was caused by a childhood accident when she was six. “I was always embarrassed by my scar when I was growing up,” she says.

She finally got over her scar as an adult and regained her confidence. “Now I know that no scar, big or small should affect a person. It is what's inside that really matters. It was truly liberating when I wore my first sleeveless clothing. It has now become a great conversation piece too!”

  Tan Ching Ching, 35

First-time mother Ching Ching sees her c-section scar as a symbol of the many emotions she felt during the birth of her beautiful baby girl. She expected the scar to be there for a while but it remained visible more than a year after the surgery. While the incision has healed well, it has left a purplish keloid scar.

However, the scar she carries with her today doesn’t quite bother her. After all, the little purple line hiding below her belly signifies the birth of her daughter who has brought nothing but love, laughter and sunshine into her life.
