Tropical , luxurious and fun. That’s how we’d describe Fern Chua’s beautiful and unique apparel designs inspired the often overlooked art form of Batik prints. Fern sat down with MC and gave us a little insight into her inspirations and her love for unique prints.
What are your design inspirations?
Places, culture, music, etc. but I really like to observe how people move in their clothing. What are your design aesthetics? I love prints and motifs, the kind that tells a story to it. Things that you can get your hands on such as hand-painted prints as they’re all one-of-a kind and they can be considered as actual pieces of art. My designs evoke a luxurious, chic, beach resort feel. Very feminine, unique and yet effortless. I love playing with versatility in my designs.
How did you get started?
I met a near death car accident in late 2009 and my left arm was paralyzed for 6 months. It was that moment I realized life is too short and decided to pursue my dream in fashion design. It was later on when I first bought a piece of batik cloth that I later turned into a dress, and I thought why not make modern pieces of clothing that’s a fun and unique take on the batik print? From what I see, the younger generation in Malaysia tend to perceive the Batik print as something ‘uncool’ and only worn by older women, but I think it’s a beautiful art form and we should be proud of it.
Tell us a bit about your collaboration with Ruzz Gahara?
I fell in love with their work and was so inspired by it. Their prints are very unique and their inspiration draws on mythological tales such as Kelantanese folklore which is uniquely depicted on their prints. If that was not enough, their luxurious fabrics are environmental friendly too.
