Rest in peace Brittany Maynard, who decided to legally end her life on Saturday (November 1, 2014) with medication prescribed under the Oregon Death with Dignity Act after learning she was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant brain tumour back in April
The 29-year old took lethal medication prescribed by a doctor and died in the comfort of her home, “as she intended – peacefully in her bedroom, in the arms of her loved ones,” Sean Crowley, a Compassion & Choices spokesman, said in a statement.
She chose November 1 to die as she wanted to celebrate her husband’s birthday on October 30. The couple recently got married in 2012 and were trying for a family when they discovered she had brain cancer.
Brittany was told last spring that she had six months to live and soon became the face of the death with dignity movement through TheBrittanyFund, after she made the decision to end her life legally using medication in Oregon.
“I will die upstairs, in my bedroom that I share with my husband – with my mother and my husband by my side and pass peacefully to music that I like in the background,” she says in the interview with Compassion & Choices.
According to People Magazine, Brittany left a note to her family and friends on Facebook which read, “Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness. The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type … Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brittany’s loved ones in this difficult time.
