In this MC Watch exclusive, we talk to the young talent Nik Qistina about her new single and her journey into the music industry.
How were you discovered – was it through social media, YouTube, a platform?
Universal Music Malaysia emailed me, they found my talent through Instagram, when they emailed me they talked about my career and where I want to be in the industry, and what’s going to be next for me. I used to make 50 second videos of myself singing, people liked it, I guess!
What has it been like for you so far in the industry?
It has been a dream actually, it has been amazing. So far I have performed at Istana Budaya; I performed with Greyson Chance – in KL and in Penang. It was amazing, I went from listening to his music to actually being with him on stage. It was life-changing. I released my single on the 16th of September and my music video came out 10th October – on my birthday actually – so the music scene so far has been beautiful for me.
Is it hectic? Does it take up a lot of your time? Do you get to spend time with your family?
It has been hectic, but for now it’s fine. I’m having finals, so they won’t touch me when I have exams or important stuff for school. I don’t really spend much time with my family, we kind of have our own stuff to do, even if it’s hectic I still call my mum and tell her where I am, tell her that I’m fine.
How would you describe your music?
Pop. Young Hearts was inspired by Selena Gomez’s song Sober.
Do you see yourself moving into different genres besides pop?
Well I do love music. I expect myself dabbling in different genres, whether it’s pop, indie, or classical.
Were you brought up with a musical background?
Nope, I’m the only child in the music business.
You mentioned Greyson Chance… who else do you look up to in the music industry?
Locally and internationally, both!
Siti Nurhaliza for sure. She’s amazing, very very talented. I’ve watched her live at her concert! My mind was blown – she’s so professional and talented. International… Performance-wise I would pick Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Demi Lovato. Singing-wise I would pick Beyonce, Ariana Grande, and Rihanna.
That’s an interesting mix of artists, quite a different genre. You mentioned you’ve performed quite a bit at live concerts – how do you prep for going on stage live?
Before Greyson I actually booked myself up for gigs, just to prepare myself for the big stage, because I know his fans were gonna be there, and there was going to be a lot of cameras. So I prepped myself and everything went well!
Where did you mostly perform your gigs at?
Merdekarya, Timbre, Barlai…
Oh I had no idea they did live music at Barlai!
Yes I actually did it there! It’s very small, the stage is very small, but I love that place, it’s beautiful.
What was the reception like?
Do you get nervous when you’re performing?
[Pauses] I still do, but when I get up on stage, I’m fine.
Being young, do you think it’s an advantage for your career?
It is a definite advantage I think.
Who would you absolutely love to perform with, given the chance?
I would love to perform with Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Rihanna. And Adele! She’s amazing.
What else can we look forward to from you for the rest of the year? Even though the year is already coming to an end.
My Malay single is coming out. It’s actually a Malay version of Young Hearts coming out this December. It’s going to be an OST for a local movie!
