How bare do you dare? A boudoir photoshoot is the hottest new way of spicing up a relationship, as one brave lady will attest.
I first found out about boudoir photography when I saw a blog post that photographer Grace Tan had written on the very first boudoir shoot that she had done. She was one of the only female photographers I knew of in Malaysia who did that sort of photography, and on top of that, I was also exposed to it because Grace told me about it personally.
I was keen to do it, but only for my husband. It was supposed to be a surprise and because it was something that I wouldn’t usually do – it’s really not something people would ever see me doing – it was even better. Most of the consultation about shoot details was done via email: I already had a look that I was going for, which was vintage retro, so it was easy to arrange once I had a clear concept on what I wanted to achieve.
On the day of the shoot, I had someone there to do my hair and makeup professionally – incidentally, she was the same makeup artist who helped to prepare me for my wedding! It became a half-day, all-girls shoot, which was so much fun. As for the lingerie I was going to wear, most of the pieces were either those that were my husband’s favourites or I had gone shopping for them– for instance, I had one ordered specially from Etsy for the shoot, and others were purchased from lingerie shops.
The shoot itself was very comfortable; it was easy doing it with girls I knew and was comfortable with, as I would never have done this shoot with people I didn’t know personally and couldn’t trust. I was pretty happy to jump into it, and I wasn’t afraid at all (a few glasses of wine helped too…).
The whole experience was definitely something I would encourage women to take on, especially if they want to give a great surprise to their husband or partner. It also helps in terms of boosting your self-confidence and being comfortable in your own body. At first, I thought I was terrible in the shoot and posing for the camera is not my forte, so I was depending on Grace to direct me, and I had cellulite and jiggles hanging out, but I told both Grace and my makeup artist – damn, let’s bloody well have fun with this shoot!
Once I received the final versions of the photographs and presented them to my husband, he was shocked and kept flipping through the photo album with his jaw down on the ground. It was fun watching his reaction, and of course, we had the best sex after that. Seeing as my husband has the photographs stored happily next to him all the time – it’s a win-win situation, since I’m pretty happy with the photographs too!
Would I do another shoot in the future? Well, I might be getting too old for it, so the next photo shoot won’t be boudoir, but me carrying a baby or two. Oh, okay…maybe just one more boudoir shoot!
Photographer Grace Tan gives us an insider’s take on her sizzling boudoir shoots.
I love making a woman feel beautiful and confident about her body and projecting it through her expression. Everyone should feel good about themselves (despite their flaws) by appreciating their strengths, instead of highlighting their weaknesses all the time. Most women are conscious about their bodies, and since this is such a sensitive shoot in terms of privacy, my clients generally prefer a female photographer. Comfort level goes up, and they trust that their photos will remain private and safe with me. There’s a fine line between classy boudoir and pornography. I had a potential client enquire about sexy shots with his partner, using sex toys! I don’t believe in doing explicit shots that are ‘in your face’, but sensuality is implied through my images.
