Deborah Melissa Bottreau – Managing & Creative Director of Sienna DMB / President of the Malaysian Association of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs
Talk about being a woman of many talents: Deborah Melissa Bottreau heads up her own company, Sienna DMB, which specialises in graphic design, branding, and event management, while she’s also the President of the Malaysian Association of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs (MAAYE). As a side project, she’s setting up Design Exchange Asia (DeXA) – a community for creative professionals to connect and educate non-designers about the importance of branding – and any spare time is spent training horses (she specialises in handling difficult thoroughbreds) and galloping around a polo field.
“Oh, I’m definitely a multitasker,” she nods enthusiastically, “I need a variety of things to do at different times, otherwise I get bored.” Deborah – who speaks English, Malay, Spanish, and a generous smattering of French – has singlehandedly built up an impressive portfolio for Sienna DMB, which includes organising the ASEAN Businesss Awards Malaysia for three years running, and conceptualising the branding for the ASEAN Business & Investment Summit 2015 (“I was so proud to see my logo displayed behind all these top world figures like President Obama and our Prime Minister,” she says).
Most of this year has been dedicated to planning the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Carnival 2016 – the first of its kind – in correspondence with its theme of connectivity, where Malaysian entrepreneurs beneath the age of 40 are actively encouraged to capitalise on the regional market offerings. “We love the fact that we can be the bigger voice for these young entrepreneurs,” Deborah expounds. “Through MAAYE, we’ve established links with the government and they’re really supportive of young entrepreneurship. We’re excited to be able to help startups, provide success-driven people with the network they want, and to connect Malaysians.”
Just as she encourages association members to build sustainable business structures, Deborah is clear about her own game plan: “I’m trying to push for new, original design and branding. The idea is to be one of the key companies to advocate this in a way that benefits the market, and hopefully Sienna DMB will maintain the quality of our work, give design importance, and create a good working environment with other strong agencies here.”
