Marie Claire South Africa by Morgane Bourgeois
The world is pretty much in agreement on this one: when it comes to sophisticated dressing, French women know what’s up (maybe there’s something in the water). Here are five ways you can steal their style, from our very own French spy in the Marie Claire SA office, Morgane Bourgeois.
1. Keep it natural
French women are almost annoyingly good at making au naturel look like a million bucks. Emulate them by keeping your make-up minimal and not over-styling your hair.
2. Let your bag do the talking
The French girl doesn’t want to look like everyone else, and the best way she can stand out is with an individual bag. (I’d personally go for a string bag, but it’s up to you.)
3. Add a little audacity
Have you ever tried on an outfit but decided against it because it’s maybe too much? Well, no more of that. If you want to get the French look right, you’ll have to be a little bit daring.
4. Steal from your man’s closet
This is top secret: the French girl is actually lazy. When she has to go out to get a baguette (not a cliché), she just mixes and matches her favourite jean with her man’s shirt. Just between us, when I get a shirt for my boyfriend, I try it on first to make sure I can borrow it later.
5. Channel the French attitude
When you picture a French woman, she has that je ne sais quoi. Study it and copy it if you can. I wouldn’t say no to a French lesson from Marta Cygan:
Et voilà… now you have everything you need to effortlessly master the French look.
