Five years ago, Posh! Nail Spa started off as a one-woman manicure business in a small room-sized salon that could only fit two chairs. Now, with four outlets flourishing across the Klang Valley, Posh! is one of the most prominent nail salons in Malaysia. It is also the first local nail salon to present a Nail Art Fashion Show in town, and this achievement was featured in The Malaysia Book of Records. At the recent Marie Claire x Braun Büffel event, Posh! teamed up with nail polish fashion artist, Clayrene (of Artclaytion), to treat guests to a manicure and a personalised illustration. This is one of the many ventures in the salon’s efforts to pursue more fashion and art related themes.
Here, the founder of Posh!, Sereen Eng, shares her future plans for the salon as well as her top nail care tips.
What is your vision for Posh! Nail Spa this year?
Having been in the nail industry for over 7 years, I’ve come to realise that there is a need for positive change in the way the public views nail technicians. People think it’s an easy job, and its regarded as a low level profession. I want to change that mindset, and let it be known that being a nail artist is a professional and respectable career, one that’s even fulfilling and rewarding. So instead of focusing merely on salon work this year, we hope to elevate society’s perception of the nail industry, by incorporating the creative best of nail, art and fashion design into our future pursuits.
How does Artclaytion’s work tie in with Posh’s vision and direction for 2017?
As of 2016, we’ve been pursuing events and collaborations that encompass nails, art and fashion. So when we came across Clayrene’s creations in March 2017, we felt that her work was very much in line with our vision. She is well known for creating fashion illustrations using a variety of mediums, one of which is nail polish. We reached out to her, and we’ve been conducting workshops and event collaborations ever since.

What new projects will Posh! be undertaking this year?
We’re extremely excited for our Fashion and Art Exhibition, which will be held later this year. All fashion and art pieces will be made using nail art elements like rhinestones, studs, nail polishes, and nail tips, just to name a few. We’re also actively involved in fashion campaigns, runway shows, magazine editorials and photo shoots.
How is Posh! different from other salons?
We care about our technicians. Every single person on our team, regardless of the level of seniority, is given a chance to rotate and try out different roles. By doing so, they’ll have a more comprehensive understanding of the entire nail business, and learn all there is to know about running a salon. We continuously encourage and educate the team by conducting weekly meetings, which include discussions on past week’s events, customer feedback, as well as updates on the latest nail trends and techniques. We want our technicians to learn and experience as much as possible during their time with Posh!, so they can make a difference wherever they plan to go in the future. I believe that empowering them through education will change the way people view this industry.
How do your nail artists come up with the designs for each season?
We always get our designs ready two months in advance. A specific theme will be assigned to our nail artists. Just like in fashion design, our artists will come up with some sketches, showing their interpretations of the theme. The first draft will contain their nail designs, elements, and colour schemes. We will then screen through the sketches and decide on the top three designs for each junior and senior nail artist. Once that’s confirmed, the nail artists will proceed to create real life samples with acrylic nails. Our marketing team then ties everything together by sharing the designs with the media and public.
List 3 of your top nail care tips.
Here are my 3 C’s of nail care:
- Clean: Regularly clean your cuticles every 2-3 weeks to keep your nails looking neat and polished
- Care: Keep a bottle of cuticle oil or hand cream with you to keep your nails and hands moisturised. It also helps to prevent premature signs of ageing.
- Coat: It is a myth that nails need to breathe. They are actually made of non-living keratin, that if left unprotected, will be prone to damages from natural elements like dry air and water and daily wear and tear. So always keep your nails coated to prevent them from peeling and chipping.
