285 million people around the world suffer from partial or total blindness. The painful truth is that 80% of visual impairments are actually preventable. If visual impairments were identified and treated in a timely manner, millions of people would not have had to experience the pain and anguish of losing their sight.
“Of all the senses, sight must be the most delightful.” Helen Keller
How To Care For Your Sight
Don’t take your sight for granted. Let’s work together to fight avoidable blindness with these 5 simple steps:
1. A Balanced Diet
Omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, Vitamin A and antioxidants help to reduce the risk of eye diseases. Try incorporating more of these foods into your daily diet – leafy greens like spinach and kale, fatty fish like salmon, cod and tuna, bright yellow and orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes, as well as eggs, nuts and beans.
2. Wear Sunglasses
Invest in a pair of sunglasses that is able to block out 99 – 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Overexposure the sun’s harmful rays increases the risk of cataracts and cause retinal damage. Excessive UV damage can also cause skin cancer of the eyelids and around the eyes.
3. Take A Break From Technology
Take a break from using your computer or smart phone. We spend up to 10 hours staring at our computer screen. This can cause undue strain on our eyes, which causes eye dryness, blurry vision, tension headaches and other eye-related issues in the long run. Take a 15 minute break every 2 hours to close your eyes or look at something in the distance to take the strain off your eyes.
4. Cut Down Your Sugar Intake
According to the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology, diabetic retinopathy is now a leading cause of blindness among working-age individuals. Based on the results of the National Health and Morbidity Surveys, if left uncontrolled, 1 in 5 Malaysians will have diabetes by year 2020. Regular eye exams are important for diabetic patients to check for early symptoms of vision impairment such as blurry eyesight, which can ultimately lead to blindness.
5. Regular Eye Exercises
Spend a few minutes a day on eye exercises that strengthen the eye muscles. Do it in the morning before your daily skincare routine or at work. Give these simple exercises a try:
- Look from side to side and focus on what you see.
- Move your eyes up and down.
- While keeping your eyes open, rotate your eyeballs towards the left.
- Switch directions and rotate your eyeballs to the right.
Repeat each exercise 5 times.
