- The Burberry Trench
This classic symbol of sartorial elegance favoured by fashion’s boldest influencers (Cara Delevigne, Alexa Chung, Jessica Chastain!) was designed in 1912 by Thomas Burberry to protect military officers from the wind and rain. While we may look at the trench coat now as stylish outerwear, this garment and all its features were designed to be functional. The characteristic epaulettes were introduced to the design so that the officers could display their rank while the storm shield at the upper back of the coat, helped water roll off, keeping the soldiers dry. For Spring 2020, Creative Director Roberto Tisci added Italian flair to the classic trench by introducing a dramatic longer length as well as feminine peplum detailing.
