Summer 2016 Elaine Thompson, swept the 100 and 200-meters sprints in Rio, becoming the first female sprinter.(and the first Jamaican ever) to accomplish this milestone since 1988.
Thompson’s success story is truly inspiring and is not something which took place over night but her success was built over time with hard work. Starting off at an early age, she grew up running for two community high schools in a small rural town of Banana Ground in the Hills of Manchester Parish, Jamaica.
Despite not earning the podium during those races, she kept with her running and was recruited by Jamaica’s University of Technology where she continued to improve as a running talent. Her true abilities shone through in 2015 when she ran a 10:97 100-meter race and won the international field.
Elaine Thompson’s success can be attributed to her perseverance through it all. Her motivation came from peers, especially her training partner, fellow Jamaican gold medalist Shelly- Ann Fraser- Pryce, who has played a pivotal role in helping shape her into the confident, winning athlete she is today.
That being said, Thompson understands the importance of having athletes to look up to and wants to inspire younger female athletes to follow their dreams. Part of her endeavor to share her story and impact young women in sport is depicted in the new Nike Beautiful X Powerful collection.
The Nike Beautiful X Powerful Collection is the second Nike footwear collection to be inspired by female athletes and their impeccable accomplishments. This one celebrates Thompson’s hard work, dedication and victories.
The collection includes 5 Nike footwear icons in crisp , white perforated leather with hints of gold. Each shoe is also embellished with Elaine’s signature, her mantra “one life, once chance”and her winning times of 21:78 for 200 meters and 10:71 for 100 meters.
