Key opinion leaders like Casey Wong open themselves up to constant judgment with every post they upload. In fact, she often receives gender discriminating comments from her male followers. “They don’t believe that women can work independently. They feel that women have to rely on a man’s money. So these people try their best to ruin our reputations by spreading false news just to destroy our careers. They seem to still believe that women will only stay with them when they have money to offer.” It didn’t help that Casey’s family was not supportive of her chosen career as a travel influencer.
She quickly spiralled into self-doubt and self-hatred, but Casey was lucky to have found the will power to keep going by telling herself to stay focused – she forced the negative thoughts out of her mind and stopped her tears by telling herself to believe in herself. During her struggles, she also discovered that many women do not have the courage to acknowledge their mental struggles because of the usual social stigma of getting judged. “I hope that by sharing my struggles my followers will know not to feel lost or neglected at every obstacle they encounter. See a therapist or at least seek help from people you trust. Never stop believing in yourself and always be positive.”
