For Mina, her struggles with anxiety started at just nine years old. The fear of performing badly in school and the thought that she might disappoint her parents left her trembling in fear and nauseated every morning before school. Even when she was properly diagnosed by a psychiatrist, Mina had difficulty accepting that she had mental health issues. Shame made her feel weak next to her peers who were handling their emotions well. “It took a long time and only after multiple visits to my psychiatrist did I realise that this is normal – it was an imbalance of hormones that caused me to become the way that I was.”
She admits that while she did reach the point of being suicidal and felt the urge to harm herself, fear of feeling dread and despair kept her from following through. She worked hard to force her thoughts in the direction of the dreams that she has yet to fulfill. She even gave herself purpose in life with the responsibility of eight pets and a beautiful home to care for to keep motivated.
