In Commemoration of her conferment of the prestigious Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight in the Legion of Honour) by the French government yesterday, for her tireless work in social and political activism, here’s a little timeline of Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir’s achievements.
1989 – present – Writer of her bi-weekly column called Musings in The Star newspaper
1993 – 2005 – President of the Malaysian AIDS Council for 12 years from 1993-2005
1997 – Awarded the Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor by HRH the Sultan of Selangor, which carries the title Datin Paduka.
1997 – Authored her first book, In Liberal Doses
2001 – 2009 – Co-Executive Producer of an award-winning TV programme for young women, 3R-Respect, Relax and Respond.
2009 – Authored her 2nd book, a compilation of her newspaper columns, 50 Days:Rantings by MM
2010 – Named the UN Person of the Year by the United Nations in Malaysia.
2011 – Named in WomenDeliver.org’s list of 100 Most Inspiring People Delivering for Girls and Women
2012 – Authored her 3rd book, Telling It Straight
2016 – The French government awarded her by making her the Knight of the Legion of Honour (Legion D’Honneur), the highest award of the nation.
Marina also sits on the Board of the Maybank Foundation, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and is a member of the International Advisory Council of the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
