Also known as Nora Lum, Awkwafina was born to a Chinese-American father and South Korean mother who passed away when she was four – she was then brought up in New York City by her father and paternal grandparents. She started rapping at the age of 13 and entered the showbiz spotlight when she was featured in Bad Rap. An official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016, it’s a documentary following the lives of Korean-American rappers. In 2018, Awkwafina acted as part of the Ocean’s 8 cast and went on to play the role of Goh Peik Lin, the Singaporean college friend of the lead actress in Crazy Rich Asians. Moving to greater strengths, she clinched the lead in The Farewell, a comedy-drama written by Lulu Wang, in 2019.
