CHIA WEN SHIN
FOUNDER OF GREEN YARDS
Who knew that a third year project could turn into a lucrative business that would benefit the environment? Green Yards is exactly that—an eco-friendly company born from one of founder Wen Shin’s assignments during her time at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at UPM. After graduating from university, Wen Shin set her eye on starting a business of her own. When the opportunity came knocking, she immediately merged her dreams of owning a business with her desire to help reduce pollution by recycling cooking oil.
Not many people know that disposing cooking oil into drains is hazardous to the environment. Not only will poor disposal of used or unused cooking oil pollute the water resources, this careless act also endangers marine life. According to Wen Shin, just in Malaysia alone, about 230 million litres of oil are poured into drains by both households and eatery businesses every year. She is driven to educate people so they can turn cooking oil into soaps, candles and even cleaning powders! Her work has definitely gained recognition with multiple conglomerates supporting her cause. She was also awarded the Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2018!
