Harriette Thompson, a 92-year old woman, becomes the oldest woman to finish a marathon! Held in San Diego on the 31st of May, Thompson ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, which she made it into the book of records for finishing in 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds. She is also a cancer survivor patient.
This was Thompson’s 16th Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon and says it’s the hardest of them all. Thompson said she had a few bumps throughout the year, preventing her from getting training in so she could be by her husband’s side. Earlier in January of this year, Thompson’s husband passed away, while she had to battle from a staph infection in one of her legs.
That doesn’t stop her from pushing her limits. She underwent treatments on her leg and after recovering, she went back to training for the marathon. She said that she thought of walking the whole way, but once she took a look around her, everyone was running and that encouraged her to follow.
Harriette Thompson didn’t begin running until a friend of hers approached her to join in her 70s. She also said that she enjoys raising money for cancer research and the marathon itself has helped keep her healthy.
“I don’t think I’d be living today if I didn’t do this running,” the cancer survivor said. “I’m helping them and they’re kind of helping me.”
