Now here’s a movie close to us Malaysians at heart. The film draws inspiration from the recent General Election (GE14) on the 9th of May, that saw the forming of a new government. The film features some very familiar faces, the likes of Jack Tan, Remy, Sangeeta Krishnasamy, Jenn Chia, Mira Filzah, Mark O’Dea, and Shashi Tharan to name a few.
What makes Rise: Ini Kalilah special is how well the days leading up to the election were depicted and seeing a multi-racial team of actors and directors working together on the film, definitely had us sold.
Malaysians especially the millennials, knew how important each and every vote meant in order to bring change to Malaysia, and change was made possible indeed with all these votes – the ones which were almost missed due to the inability to be brought back on time. Teamwork saw Malaysians flying in with postal votes from other Malaysians overseas and some helped pay transportation cost for others to come home and vote.
Executive Producer Fred Chong started on the movie’s script as soon as the election period began and the movie release is timed perfectly to celebrate Malaysia Day. Fred Chong is no stranger to the movie scene with well-publicised shows like Nasi Lemak 2.0, Hantu Gangster, Kara King, and Banglasia under his name – most of which are based on true stories.
