The discussion on conversation difficulties known as diversity fatigue has been going on for a while now. Nowadays people make less effort to engage in a conversation because they mostly end up being meaningless “small talk.” As a workforce, we crave for consistent opportunities to create a better workflow. It should begin with a good foundation.
Here are 3 essentials of why you should care about diversity at the office:
1. You will learn to lead and communicate effectively
Diversity does consider all aspects of life beyond race, gender equity and religion. It is also about interacting with people who have different values, perspectives, and ability.
There is no better training ground for leadership than to steer a group of diverse individuals; to harness their distinct capabilities towards achieving a collective vision.
As you rise to the top of your field, the need to inspire and provide guidance to others will become increasingly important. As the workforce also inevitably becomes more diverse, you’ll be more grateful of value you’ve learned and experience throughout the years.
2. You will learn to innovate
Based on numerous studies, diversity is a key driver of innovation at the workplace. By fostering broader perspectives, it creates greater fuel for creativity and innovation. In result, you are able to generate new ideas from products and services to improving company policy.
As a workforce, being in an environment that welcomes different experiences and multiple voices encourage you to contribute and think from numerous angles fearlessly and confidently. This contributes a continuity to push your innovation meter up, bringing more value to the workplace.
3. You will have better opportunities
To some, limitation on career progression can be demotivating. Instead, a unified voice in an organization helps to create better opportunities and may break down the glass-ceiling barriers.
It creates a space that values, promotes and nurtures talented individuals irrespective of their background. Better yet, it provides more opportunities for people (like you) to grow and strengthen their career.
Think about a workplace that understands your unique challenges (be it caring for young children or elderly parents or a health complication, for example). A place that is willing to support and empower you as you take on new roles and responsibilities. Wouldn’t that be a great sign of encouragement?
